Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) has brought forth deepfake technology, which poses a serious threat to the digital information ecosystem. This study examines the influence of exposure to AI-generated videos of public figures on students' level of trust in media message content. In this study, the level of trust is operationalized as the level of skepticism, where a high score indicates high skepticism. Grounded in Source Credibility Theory and Cultivation Theory, this research employs a quantitative approach with an explanatory survey design. Data were collected through an online questionnaire from 126 students of the IPB Vocational School. The results demonstrate that exposure to AI videos has a significant and strong influence on students' level of trust. A simple linear regression analysis yielded a coefficient of determination (R Square) of 0.759. This finding indicates that repeated exposure to AI videos does not increase naive trust, but rather cultivates a broader attitude of skepticism toward media messages in general.
