REPRESENTASI BUDAYA KEJAWEN DALAM FILM PRIMBON
Abstract
This research analyzes the representation of Kejawen culture in the film Primbon (2023) through Stuart Hall's representation theory and Umberto Eco's semiotics. As seen in Indonesian horror films, local cultural elements are often reduced to mystical ornaments. This study uses a qualitative approach and semiotic analysis to identify the meaning behind cultural symbols presented in the film. The findings indicate that Primbon represents Kejawen through rituals such as tahlilan, ruwatan, siraman, and the use of the primbon book, as well as symbolic elements like sesajen, kuda lumping, and burung kedasih. These elements reflect spiritual values and the Javanese worldview of balance between humans, nature, and the metaphysical. The film serves not only as entertainment but as a cultural discourse that preserves and reinterprets local wisdom in a modern society
